What is the best bait or lure for brown trout?
31.July, 2009
I have a vacation home upstate ny, and in the back there is a river where there is brown trout. I would like to know what the best bait is to use for brown trout or what is the best lure to use?
Try worms or powerbait.
You can also try spinners like panther martin or rooster tails.
As G G said, there is no best bait, it is all a matter of preference.
Is Hillary still angling for the nomination?
31.July, 2009
THE ARTICLE - "Sen. Hillary Clinton Seeks Democratic Convention Voice"
LINK - http://abcnews.go.com/print?id=5528104
This story doesn’t say precisely that but it does say Hillary seeks to share power at the Democratic convention and the DNC is trying to figure out how to pacify her and still keep the convention’s main purpose which is to launch the Democratic nominee who is Barack Obama.
Sure, recognize Hillary. But does she still think she’s got kingmaker power or what? Does this article make you think she’s still hoping somehow she’ll be the nominee?
The one thing that is true in this is that Hillary did NOT concede the primary. She merely suspended her campaign. Should something happen with Obama she has followed the rules that will allow her to get the nomination.
She’s got something up her sleeve…and it ain’t just her arm!

How to wash fishing reels?
31.July, 2009
I just bought a catfish reel planning that I can use it for saltwater. Does anyone know how to wash and oil it after I’m done for the day? Do I have to take it all apart?
Any websites or experience would be appreciated. Thanks!
It really depends on the reel. Some reels made for saltwater can last most of a season with minimal cleaning (I’ve seen crew on sportboats keep their tackle on board for months, fishing just about daily, with no problems.) I used to just spray my reels (and rods) lightly with fresh water at the end of the day to get the salt off the outside, then clean them thoroughly every 10-12 trips or so.
However, if it’s made for freshwater, or if it gets dunked in salt water, you should clean it out thoroughly. (If you’re fishing from a pier and not getting much salt water on it, then you probably don’t need to worry about it as much, but on a boat or in the surf, there’s enough salt spray that you should keep it clean.)
If you’re opening it up after a day on the water and it looks fine inside (like no water got inside) that means you probably don’t need to clean it out that much. If it’s gunky, then definitely clean it. You’ll just have to see how that reel stands up to the fishing you do.
But once you’re done fishing for the season, make sure you clean it out thoroughly before you pack it away.

What kind of bait should I use at Lake Hopatcong?
31.July, 2009
I’ll be going fishing in a couple weeks up at Lake Hopatcong. I’m not too sure what fish are actually in there, so I don’t know what type of bait to use. I wouldn’t know what bait even if I DID know the kind of fish there, so any info will be helpful.
Does anyone know what type of fish are common there?
Also, what bait should I use for each type or in general?
thanks a lot for all of that advice…only problem is I don’t know what those things are lol…I tried looking them up but I came up with different things…
could you maybe post some pictures or links to them? I have rooster tails, a fake frog, some fake fish lures (small like minnows), and I also have all different colors of fake worms for bait…will any of those be good?
I found some more fake bait…different colors of small squid shaped things and crayfish…would these be useful?
I fish in lake Hopatcong all the time and the best things are yamamoto senkos(watermelon black works great), top water(green orange belly), crank baits(black with silver belly), and spinners(mepps)(gold blades). Try some of these if they don’t work you should give up because I catch bass on this stuff in lake Hopatcong and also Bear Pond all the time.
in lake Hopatcong theirs large and small mouth bass, pickerel, musky, catfish, perch, walleye, and carp.
How are you supposed to tackle and shuck someone off?
31.July, 2009
I need to know this because people have been riding my case about not doing both, so, I need to know how to tackle someone bigger than me, and also shuck someone off.
I know what you mean. I have taken down someone twice my size by simply cut blocking them. Just dive at their knees and you should be good. Or, get low, put your should in their belly, and just drive back til forward progress is stopped and the play is over. I don’t know what you mean by ’shucking’ someone. I assume you mean breaking a tackle. Just keep running and kinda twist to the direction to shake em off, don’t stop that just makes it easier for them to hold on.
What are your favorite carp recipes?
31.July, 2009
And don’t tell me to cook it on a board and then eat the board - heard that one a dozen times already. Carp really doesn’t taste bad, it just seems incredibly bland and uninteresting. I recently bought a few jars of gefilte fish which is mostly made from carp, and therefore bland. Any tips for kicking this fish up a notch?
Thanks!
Carp about a foot long are better eating than the larger ones. Cut a fillet and soak it in a beaten egg, take some pancake mix [dry] and add salt and pepper to it, dip the soaked fillet in the pancake mix and fry in a 1/4 inch of oil in a hot skillet. Lemon pepper adds flavor also.
I want to send my boyfriend and his friends on a crabbing charter for his birthday in the Annapolis/Chesapeake Bay area. I’m having a hard time finding a place that I think would be good–all the places I’ve come across seem to specialize in fishing, and can kinda manage some crabbing on the side if someone asks. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations of a place I could use? Thanks!
not many boats do crabbing in the bay. you can buy crab traps and go to a pier or rent a boat and crab with chicken necks
here is a list of crabbing info and places to buy traps, rent boats and piers to fish from

Why do most fishing lures have 2 or 3 treble hooks?
31.July, 2009
Can I remove or replace the treble hooks w/ singles & will I destroy the action if I do?.
Are there manufacturers of medium & large lures that don’t have so many hooks?
More hook points = more hookups.
I’m not sure what type of lures you’re using, so I’ll try to cover what I can.
Changing out parts is something many/most avid fisherman do regularly. eg. I throw Cordell pencil poppers, but the hooks bend because they’re weak, so I replace them with Gamikatsu 2x trebles. They are topwater lures, so there’s not much risk of over weighting them or ruining the action by changing hooks out. With other bass-type lures, buzzbaits, crankbaits, jerkbaits, swimbaits, etc…I usually swap the hooks out. With larger lures that have three trebles, I’ll generally take out the middle hook to prevent the hooks from touching and tangling on eachother while working the lure. Also., once a fish is hooked, it prevents the middle hook from interferring and potentially aiding in disloging the other hook. Trebles will increase the number of hookups because, well, there are three hooks, not one. Single/siwash hooks are better at keeping fish hooked. However, when using barbed hooks, it’s a little harder to make the comparison, but it’s still there. Single hooks also offer a longer shank, making it more difficult for a head-shaking fish to shake the hook out.
When salmon/sleethead fishing with plugs, I’ll swap out hooks with single siwash on chain swivels. This has proven to be the most effective configuration for me.
In general, changing hooks out will not ruin the action of lures. If there is a change in the action, 99% of lures made now are "tunable" in one way or another. Most manufacturers include the directions in the packaging.
