We want to put our old refrigerator down in the basement, but the doors are too small. Anybody experienced in this know a way to do this?

Refrigerators are typically 25" deep, so turn the refrigerator sideways to go through the door. You may have to remove the doors, both on the fridge and the wall.

Measure the depth of the fridg with and without the doors. You may need to remove the doors and hinges. If your off by an inch or so, remove the inner molding from the doorway, this will give you that extra inch.

I dont think you can move enough doors or molding to get another 6 inches maybe if you have wood flooring covered by carpet,Make a trap door in a large closet.you can remove a section somewhere and drop the fridge in that way.

You shouldn’t even have a 26 inch door in a house now adays. This must be an interior door into another room. If this is the case you might be able to take off the trim and take out the casing, and depending upon how much it’s shimmed maybe make another 2 or 3 inches. On the fridge you can pull off the doors, which change the effective depth of the fridge, then turn the frige sideways, and max it should only be about 26-29 inches deep or wide now that you have turned it 90 degrees. Most fridges now a days are narrower on the depth (front to back) then on the width (side to side) and being able to remove the doors, makes it even less so.

Ohhhh….let’s see, square hole/round peg….no no no round hole/square peg,…no that wasn’t it either. Try measuring your fridge with out the doors attached, and your doorway without the door and hinge. You could even take the whole frame and door out if you are handy and you should have a 29" to 30" rough opening. That might work.

You might try removing the door from the refrigerator. But even so, it would be a tight fit if it fit at all.

The old refrigerator in the basement idea will cost a bunch of money on your electric bill over the course of a year. The best thing is to donate it to a charity that will come and get it.
