How can a mouse take bait from a snap trap without setting it off?

We have a mouse in our house. We tried d-con pellets, instant mashed potato flakes, and peanut butter scented glue traps. Finally, we put out 3 old-fashioned snap traps. This morning, when I went to check the three traps, the bait was gone from each trap, but none of them were set off. How is this possible? I know I set the traps the right way. Are there any other methods I could try to use to kill this pest?
Try slathering peanut butter on the trap before you set it. We had mice a few years ago, and didn’t get rid of them until we actually found out how they were getting in the house. They were climbing up a vine I had planted by the electric meter which has a hole into the house. Plug up all the little holes coming into your house too! They are tricky and can fit in teeny tiny places!

D-con has boxes with bags of rat/mouse poison. You can put them under the house or in the attic. Good luck

Mice can be very gentle when eating. Try something you can tie to the hole where you put the bait. A piece of bacon tied with string or thread would do the trick.

Use peanut butter. It works because they can’t run away with the bait, they have to stay and lick it off. That always springs the trap.

The newer snap traps need to be "played with" to find the proper way to make them more sensitive. I have had to sometimes bend the bait holder to make it operate the trap with less pressure.

We had that happen once at our house. We re-baited the traps every night for days. The next morning the bait was always gone. Then, one day, I walked in just in time to see a nice trail of little black ants to and from the trap. They already had it almost gone! I couldn’t believe it.
