What kind of bait should I use at Lake Hopatcong?
31.July, 2009
I’ll be going fishing in a couple weeks up at Lake Hopatcong. I’m not too sure what fish are actually in there, so I don’t know what type of bait to use. I wouldn’t know what bait even if I DID know the kind of fish there, so any info will be helpful.
Does anyone know what type of fish are common there?
Also, what bait should I use for each type or in general?
thanks a lot for all of that advice…only problem is I don’t know what those things are lol…I tried looking them up but I came up with different things…
could you maybe post some pictures or links to them? I have rooster tails, a fake frog, some fake fish lures (small like minnows), and I also have all different colors of fake worms for bait…will any of those be good?
I found some more fake bait…different colors of small squid shaped things and crayfish…would these be useful?
I fish in lake Hopatcong all the time and the best things are yamamoto senkos(watermelon black works great), top water(green orange belly), crank baits(black with silver belly), and spinners(mepps)(gold blades). Try some of these if they don’t work you should give up because I catch bass on this stuff in lake Hopatcong and also Bear Pond all the time.
in lake Hopatcong theirs large and small mouth bass, pickerel, musky, catfish, perch, walleye, and carp.

I have caught a lot of catfish on stink bait and worms, catfish are scavengers and pretty much eat off the bottom,
and bass with lures and sometimes worms - bass are territorial and will usually strike on anything in their territory.
If your not sure just take some live bait like worms, craw-fish, minnows etc - and some lures. worm will usually always catch something tho.
If you use stink bait don’t get it on your hands or you will never get the smell out
edit - I looked it up ( nothing else to do) lots of bass, trout and channel cat… check this out:http://www.njskylands.com/odfishop.htm
edit: I don’t know much about lures etc, tho I know they are for bass etc and you should choose pick a color of lure that will stand out in the color of water you will be fishing in.
I am by no means a pro, I just love the outdoors and fishing is fun… you can just do what I do… make sure that you have lots of worms since you can catch almost anything with them. And if that fails switch to a lure or crank bait or something along those lines. I’ve never had any luck with the plastic worms myself, tho I have caught fish useing hotdogs, velveeta cheese and cheerios too. And like I said before stinkbait is great for catfish, you will have to buy a special hook for them, I believe its a treble(3 pronged) hook with a long sponge above the hook, just tie that to your line and get a stick (for godsakes dont use your hand!!!) and mash it into the jar so that nasty stuff is covered all over the sponge. Anybait shop should carry stinkbait and wal-mart has it too I think…. I really don’t know much but this is what I know…. Good Luck and have fun
