I live in minnesota and there is alot of common carp around where i live in the rivers. i usually bottom fish with nightcrawlers or chicken liver and catch cat fish and sheepshead. but i was wondering how to catch carp because i see them jumping all day and want to catch them on the days where i dont catch anything else. any suggestions?

Here in the UK, fishing for Carp is as popular as Bass fishing is in the USA…. and as a result, just as the USA is a world leader in lure fishing technology, the UK is a world leader in inventing ways to fish for Carp.

On days they’re jumping about (especially when it’s warm), they’re usually to busy breeding to care about food…. but fishing with surface baits is a popular way to catch them in the UK during the summer months when they appear to be feeding on the surface.

One of the sneaky techniques we use is a "hair rig", where the bait is threaded onto a needle, then slid onto a seperate length of line attached to the hook:

They’re then used in conjunction with either a "bolt rig", or a controller float, with either a matchbox sized chunk of bread crust, or a "pop-up boilie" for bait (among other options)

What I always do here in Iowa is use corn. It works great and you don’t have all those other fish trying to get your bait…Well, I haven’t caught anything else on corn but the carp love it! One thing you can do for some catfish bait is gut the carp. Channel cat love the guts. But you have to use the guts within 1-2 days. Another things you can do is take the carp home after you gutted them and wrap them in newspaper and let them sit out for a few days in the sun until they’re a little soft(not too soft!). Then you just fillet them out and you have a bunch of great meat for cat fishing!

    Good Luck!

I’ve had the best luck on carp using Wheaties. Take a handful of the cereal, crunch it up and dip your hand in water. Knead it into a tough dough then pack it around a #10 treble hook. Use just enough to completely cover the hook. Fish it on the bottom with a slip sinker rig or with just enough weight to cast as far as you need to and to hold the bottom in the current. I’ve never failed to catch carp with this set-up.

i like to carp fish too, and the 2 best baits to use are boiled corn and boilies. make sure u have a good reel and pole, cus they can put up a great fight. dont waste money on commercial baits eihter, until you get a feel for what they like to eat, good luck, and remember to be patient

Get a hook, or treble hook, and make a doughball into little balls to mold around the hook. Put a couple split-shots about a foot and a half above the hook and your ready to go. I like to use 14 lb. monofilament on all my reels. And if you don’t want to make a messy doughball, use corn or Wheaties as stated above.

I haven’t done it in years but when I was a boy in New Jersey we would used corn meal with a few drops of vanilla . use a large hook and very little weight. Caught several in 20 to30 lb range in the Delaware River.
