Gone Fishin’!

hi i have just noticed that my 20 inch koi carp has white spots on him , only on his fines what treatment can i buy or has any one any home remedies thanks su…..

Might be carp pox. If it looks like waxy bumps or pimples, is mainly on the fins, and only appears in cooler weather/water, it is most certainly pox (though skin cancer is not unheard of in koi….). The pox looks ugly, but is fairly harmless, and will go away on it’s own once the water warms up. If you want to speed up this treatment, heat the water no faster than 1 degree per hour, up to 85 degrees F (any warmer than that and you will end up with fish soup!).

According to koivet.com (a website run by a veterinarian specializing in the care and keeping of koi and goldfish), here is a perfect "shot gun" remedy that will not harm the fish:

"Here’s a perfect shotgun remedy that won’t hurt fish:

(1) Salt to 0.3 or 0.6%
(2) Warm the fish no faster than one degree per hour, up to the mid seventies, or if you want to combat Koi Herpes Virus, use the same "one degree per hour" heating from their ambient temperature up to 86oF
(3) MediKoi food is, in my estimation, by far the best made, best formulated medicated food. It will help control bacterial infections.
(4) Dimilin handily controls comparatively rare but large parasites like Anchor Worms and Fish Lice.
(5) Prazi or Prazi containing medications control Flukes on Koi and Goldfish best.

Using all of the above at the same time can be highly successful against most parasitisms and infections. The space in which this is done should be the largest possible (100+ gallons), with plenty of hiding-cover, algae or live plants, and plenty of water turnover for aeration."

Personally, I do the above only I don’t bother with the heating, and I substitute Pro-Form C (basically, formalin) for the Dimilin. Also, I like the powdered form of the Praziquantel, not the "fake" liquid prazi.

Read the other answers 68f is really good and you do have a pond and you do alot of water changes? The filter should be 4 times as powerful for a fish as dirty as Koi (No offence, Fact!)

On episodes 13 and 14 of Wizards of Waverly Place, a flopping rubber koi (carp) is used as a prop. I’d like to find one (either electronic or just soft rubber) as a gag gift for a friend. Anyone know where I could get one, or whether it was made specially for the show?

I see this HUMUNGOUS fish flapping its fins out of the water everytime i fish this lake. is it mating, is it feeding off the top, is it injured? I HAVE NO IDEA. It is at a golf course where they throw in "Carp" and I am assuming its a grass carp since they use them there for weed controll. how do i catch this fish and should i cast where I saw the one on top of the water?

I am having the same problem. The best response I got was using a type of berry that was native to my area.There is a big difference between grass carp and common carp as far a the feeding habits.

Has anyone got any tips,techniques or baits on how to catch small carp in the winter season…

little bit chilly for carp me thinks. lobworm is great winter bait, maybe hemp or chopped worm to try and get the fish feeding. fish the bait right at the bottom and hope for the best!

What would be your idea tackle for carp fishing if you had to pick?

What rod would you use?

What reel?

What size/brand hooks?

What bait?

I would use a 6ft-6.6 medium action rod or higher. Reel I would use any Southbend with a gear ratio of 5.2 or higher. For hooks #8 salmon egg or # 6 or lower baitholder hooks. However , youll probably need thick hooks such as the live bait ones to compensate for the weight of the larger carp.Bait, this is the the enjoyable part. Bread, corn, dough, worms, and nuts. I would chum with bread every 15min and use dough, corn, or nuts as bait. You can mix these up for your chum. Chum often and sparring , you need to give them a reason to swim to your area.As far as line if you want a challenge 8lb line. However, I stick with 14lb because these guys are usually in the 10lb+ range. Fish near structures and try to gain higher ground. These fish patrol alot and if you find those routes , ambush them boy. Good luck
