I would like to use a vinyl poor that I have to raise trout. I would like to put about 300 fingerlings in this spring and raise them for 4 or 5 years. We have severe winters and will the vinyl pool survive? Our water is pure well water and we have lots of it.

Two things I would be concerned about: Temperature control summer and winter. The pool could rapidly heat up in the summer and perhaps freeze solid in winter or at least reduce the oxygenation level to lethal concentration. Filtration of the pool water. That many trout will generate a lot of wastes. Will your current filter system be adequate to remove toxic wastes from the water.

A couple of other factors: What will you do with the waste water? There may be restrictions on how clean the water from your rearing pool has to be. Disease control. With that many fish in close quarters, if a disease starts it could spread rapidly. Can you legally possess game fish to raise and sell in your area? Do you need a license or health certificate if you want to sell your crop to the public.

I vaguely recall a culture system in which trout were raised in large numbers, I think in Outdoor Life or may Popular Mechanics probably 20 years or more ago. You might try a search to see if you can find the article.

Trapper’s in OKC used to serve a Pan-fried Rainbow Trout Rockefeller. It was covered in a hollandaise sauce and spinach but do not any other ingredents..

Rainbow trout release

01.September, 2009

On April 10th, 2008, the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC released over 1,000 rainbow trout into Lafarge Lake in Coquitlam. Up to 10,000 rainbow trout are expected to be released into Lafarge Lake this season.

These fish, weighing between 250g and 600g, are intended to be caught by anglers. It is an urban fishery that can be participated by anglers of all ages and skill levels. There are up to 20 lakes in the Lower Mainland where this put and take fishery takes place year round. The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC is funded by your angling license dollars.

Here’s what I usually do:

After you clean the fish, stuff it with chopped onions, celery, cilantro and sprinkle in some lemon pepper. Then wrap the fish in bacon and then wrap some tin foil around it. Throw it on the grill and when it’s close to done, remove the foil and finish cooking without the foil.

It comes out pretty good! However, my wife’s not crazy about that recipe. I’d like to make something different for a change; something that we’ll BOTH enjoy. So…

Does anyone know any good recipes for cooking rainbow trout on the grill??

Thanks!

HONEY-MUSTARD GRILLED TROUT:
1/4 cup reduced-fat mayonnaise
1 Tablespoon cider vinegar
1 Tablespoon prepared mustard
1 Tablespoon honey
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
4 large onions, cut into 1/2-inch slices
6 trout fiillets (6 ounces each)
Coat grill rack with nonstick cooking spray before starting the grill. In a bowl, combine the first five ingredients. Place onions cut side down on grill rack with sides touching. Arrange fillets on onion slices. Cover and grill over medium-hot heat for 5 minutes. Baste with mustard mixture. Cook 5-6 minutes longer or until fish flakes easily with a fork, basting frequently. Discard onion slices. Yield: 6 servings.

I saw some trout, like pretty big ones too maybe 1.5 feet long, in a shallow mountain pond. deepest point at maybe 2 feet deep, 9000 feet in the mountains.

i’m just curious as to what happens to the trout when the pond freezes over in the colorado winter. the pond definatly will freeze, do the fish just go with it and wake up in spring?

Most fish escape to deeper waters before the freeze over and continue doing what fish do. Some hibernate and some, well they just end up being bear food in the spring.

I wana do some stream fishing for trout when I come out, and I will be staying near San Bernadino. Kinda wana get in the mountains somewhere near there. So if anyone knows of anywhere that would be great.

Laguna Niguel Lake is stocked weekly and I have been very happy there. Just be sure and go during the week and get out there early. Good Luck

Im new to trout fishing, i will be fishing in a pond that DNR stocks. I have a jar of the berkley power nuggets. What is the best way to rig it?

Power bait trout dough works the best when it floats underwater. The dough will absorb water once it is in water and the buoyancy will change. The best hook is a size 18 gold treble hook. You can’t substitute gold hooks with bronze hooks because bronze hooks are heavier. Many might suggest treble hooks between size 14 to 16 but power bait dough can not keep those hooks stay afloat for very long once under water.

You will need a long leader for crystal clear waters and a shorter leader for murky waters. For beginners, I think an 18 inch leader is a good start. You can extend the leader another 6 to 8 inches if the water is very clear on a bright, sunny day. You should shorten the leader by 6 to 8 inches if the water is murky. For night fishing, you use 12" leader in clear waters and 6" leader in murky waters.

You use a carolina rig like this: http://www.combat-fishing.com/salmoneggsliplead.jpg and you use a 1/8oz sliding egg sinker. It is advised that you use an ultra-light setup with a line no bigger than 4lb test mono. You can step up to 6lb test lines if you use a fluorocarbon leader. Stick with mono lines for night fishing because fluorocarbon lines are highly visible under low light conditions.

A rig like this is very effective but you won’t be able to release most of the fish. About 4 out of 5 fish will swallow hook. You can substitute size 18 treble with size 12 Owner mosquito hooks if you wish to do more catch and release.
