When did cinemas stop using film reels and convert to digital?
09.September, 2009
I can’t seem to find this information, roughly what year did cinemas start using digital film? Also, does anyone know how much cheaper this was and any other details
Thanks
My local cinema still uses reels.

I don’t know a specific date. but, based on when the technology was brought out into modern society I would personally say anywhere from the early to mid 90′s. the military has had this tech from the sixties and others alike like GPS systems which only in the last 5 years have become more and more common. the same principle is applied from the conversion of reel to digital memory. its been here a few decades, just not on mass scale. hope that cleared a few things up..

They still use reels sometimes. Right now they are transitioning to mainly using digital I suppose.
Obviously it’s cheaper because one copy of a film on reels is several thousand dollars – a digital copy is just the cost of a bluray disk – plus the cost of shipping those large heavy reels to all the theaters across the country at the same time is pretty high too.

Most cinemas still use reels. It costs a lot to upgrade your projectors so unless you need new ones or you’re a new cinema then there isn’t much point.
My 2 local cinemas each have 1 digital projector each, the rest of the screens are still reels.

Maybe so they could easily pirate the films? How many movies seem to be leaked onto the internet nowadays since converting to digital?
