What bait, rigs, reel/rod are needed for tarpon and corvina fishing?
17.December, 2009
I’ve caught small Tarpon on Bass fishing gear AND on Offshore conventional tackle. It all depends on WHERE your fishing for them.
I once hooked into a MONSTER Tarpon while fishing for Sheephead on a bridge in Pensacola Florida. It was one of those "memorable moments" you never forget……..Of course, I forgot to "bow" to him and he cut me off after his first jump. But you ain’t seen nothing ’til you see a 100 LB Tarpon take flight at dawn. Boy howdy!
Best BIG Tarpon baits?
Live Blue Crab, Mullet head, live Ladyfish,
Best lure for BIG Tarpon? "Break-away" Jig system.
Ugh……in regards to Corvina. Are you talking about "Sea Bass"? Or West Coast Corvina?
It’s unfortunate, but I’ve never had the chance to go fishing on the West Coast. HOWEVER, one of my buddy’s lives on the coast of Oregon and he wants me to come out sometime this Spring. Maybe I’ll get to go then?

there are still (some) orangemouth corvina in the upper reaches of the gulf of california. still just a very few toutouava. both were stocked in the salton sea.
corvina don’t grow near as large as a tarpon. bass gear will work fine for them. live bait.
corbina from socal surf are smaller yet.
toutouava are/were a simlar fish but got huge. 100 pounders were not uncommon. usually gotten as a by-catch on someone’s hooked corvina. real tackle busters. literally. use tarpon gear for them. and hope it holds up.
