I’ll be taking the kids camping, and should we be lucky enough to catch rainbow trout in the creek next to where we’ll be camping, I’d like us to cook it over the campfire and enjoy the fish. Can this be done without a pan? Can we just use tinfoil? Ideas?

Yes to foil……..I can tell you how my husband has done it for 10 years ,on our grill

clean each fish and rinse, leave the skin on for now
put the fish in the foil if you happen to have a lemon with you give it a little squirt and a pat of butter ( it will make a little sauce of sorts)
wrap it up to seal about 6/8 minutes on each side
I would not put it right in the flames only over hot coles or off to the side. when the fish is done the skin will peel right away and you can lift the bones right out and make sure that you have them all . I really hope this helps have fun!!!!

Just wrap it in tinfoil. We add a small slice of butter, garlic powder and lemon pepper. Yummmm! Here is and easy breakfast recipe that we love and has easy clean up. Slice up some stuff that you would use for omlettes, mix up eggs in a bowl, get small freezer bags and a large pot full of water. Give each kid a freezer bag about1/4 full of eggs and let them add other ingredients that they would want in their omlettes. Drop bags in boiling water and you’ll be able to tell when they are done…I didn’t think that it would cook thoroughly but they do. Easy clean up and everybody loves it!

Wrap it in foil along with some garlic, butter, salt and pepper, cook it indirectly over the fire, and leave the skin on.

here’s how i do it and it turns out great! both ways.

    Rock Fried Fresh Fish

    David Herzog

1 fresh caught, cleaned fish, head on
1 Willow branch, bark removed, or bamboo skewers soaked in water
1 flat rock, not shale, sandstone, slate or wet rock from water
(these rocks can explode when heated)
Seasonings to taste that you like on fish, or salt and pepper

Build a fire then place a flat rock on the edge of the fire pit, and pre heat the rock. Cut Willow branch or wet bamboo into 3” pieces with a point on both ends. Place the sticks into the belly area of the fish to hold the cavity open. Sprinkle the interior of the cavity with seasoning or salt and pepper.
Place fish on the rock with the cavity facing the fire. Turn
fish over onto other side to cook on rock. Continue cooking and turning until fishes head falls off the body. Enjoy!

    Serves 1

The other way, i clean the trout and stuff the trout with salsa and wrap in a double layer of aluminum foil and cookes next to the fire turning once to keep the heat even on both sides of the fish. of place on a cooking grate over the fire and flip the packet once. over the fire takes about 4 minutes per side. next to the fire it takes 10 minutes per side
